Should I Insulate My Pipes in the Winter?

Burst pipes are a messy and preventable side effect of frigid winter temperatures. Any homeowner can be forced to deal with burst pipes when the water freezes inside the pipes in their home. If you allow water to freeze inside your pipes this winter, it can lead to water damage, flooding, mold and mildew.

One of the easiest ways to prevent burst pipes is to insulate them with pipe insulation. The process of insulating your pipes involves wrapping the pipes with a special material to keep them form and prevent them from freezing.

Such "special" material usually comes in the form of fiberglass attic insulation, or pre-made tubular sleeves that simply slide over the pipes. We recommend looking for insulation with an R-4 rating.

Advantages of Insulating Your Pipes

The advantages of insulating your pipes are many, and there's no better time than now to do it – especially since winter has officially arrived. Some of these benefits include:

#1. You can do it yourself.
If you're okay with a DIY project, this is one job that you can do yourself. You can insulate the pipes at your own pace, and you can begin by identifying the areas that will be the most susceptible to cold weather, for example, the pipes under your kitchen sink. If you plan on insulating pipes in hard to reach places, you may want to get a friend to help out.

#2. Insulation helps preserve pipes.
There's no question that insulating your pipes helps preserve them. Not only will it help stop your pipes from freezing or bursting, it will protect them from dust, dirt, bugs, and other nasty critters.

#3. It prevents water damage.
We don't have to tell you that water damage can be one of the most costly and pervasive problems that a homeowner will ever have to deal with. If a little insulation can prevent a burst pipe and water damage, would you do it? Absolutely because it's a no-brainer.

Water damage can lead to mold, thereby affecting the quality of the air that you and your family breathes. Even a tiny leak can slowly wreak havoc and you might not find out about it until after it's caused a lot of damage.
