Tips to Prevent Plumbing Mishaps

Plumbing mishaps can occur at any time. While it may be ideal for there to be no issues at all with your plumbing, this is not likely. Constant use can cause problems with pipes, water heaters, drains, and more. In order to prevent an issue from becoming a bigger problem, we provided some tips to follow when plumbing goes awry.

Check Your Toilet

The toilet tank does more than hold water. If you are concerned that your toilet is leaking, this is the first place to look. You should keep an eye on how your toilet is performing. If you are concerned or think there may be an issue, you can call a plumber for support.

Warped Rubber Cover
The rubber cover at the bottom of the tank is there to prevent water leakage, but with repeated use, can become warped. A cheap replacement can be purchased and installed instead of allowing more damage to occur.

To tell if this cover is warped, simply add a few drops of food coloring to the water in the tank. If the colored water makes it into the toilet bowl, the stopped needs to be replaced.

Keep up the Toilet Tank
Do you clean the tank when you clean the toilet? Ignoring this part of the toilet can lead to mold, mildew, and other bacteria building up in the tank.

The water in the tank is pushed into the toilet bowl when you flush, dirtying the bowl and bringing these substances into the pipes. Cleaning the tank with a tile descaler as part of your regular bathroom cleaning routine can prevent buildup of harmful substances in the tank.

Clean the Toilet Bowl
Unclean toilet bowls contribute to corrosion and clogging in the pipes. By not cleaning this part of the toilet, you are hiding problems that may be lurking in the tank or pipes. Cleaning the toilet with vinegar, baking soda, and water can begin to clear up hard-to-clean buildup.

Check Water Pressure

While having a firm burst of water may be ideal in the shower, it is not friendly for the pipes in your home. Water pressure should be around 80 psi and can be tested with a cheap gauge found at plumbing supply stores. Any leaks in pipes that occur from high water pressure should be taken care of early on.

Leaks related to water pressure can be fixed in a few ways:

  • Have a contractor install a regulator if water pressure is too high
  • Adjust the regulator so water pressure is between 55-75 psi
  • Replace old water pipes with steel braided pipes

Re-Caulk Wet Areas

Caulk can help keep water where it should be instead of allowing it to leak to areas not suited for water. Caulk also prevents water from seeping from a place like the shower or bathtub and onto the floors, which can cause the wood underneath to rot.

Re-caulking is easy. Use a flat device to remove the old caulk, clean the surface, let it dry, and then re-caulk. Smooth the caulk to create an even appearance.

These tips can help avoid some common plumbing mishaps. If you are in need of a plumber, don't hesitate to call A-1 Sewer & Septic Service Inc. immediately! Fixing plumbing problems early can help save money and hassle for any homeowner.
