Summer Plumbing Tips

Kansas City Plumber

Last weekend marked the official beginning of summer, and as time rushes on, it can be all too easy to let certain maintenance tasks fall by the wayside. Unfortunately for many people, this can result in a rude awakening, as small plumbing problems grow into massive emergencies. So here are some tips and reminders of what you could be inspecting to ensure that you have a fun summer, free of plumbing misadventures.

Here's where you can start in the basement/garage, washroom, and the outdoors:

  • Take a look at your water heater's label. You can find the month and year that the water heater was made in the serial number; the date will be the first four numbers. If that date was more than 15 years ago, you should probably replace your water heater.
  • Check the washing machine hose for a leak as well. First look for any breaks, then turn on the valves to watch for any leaking.
  • Look for any standing water outside, which could be a sign of cracked pipes, one that is less noticeable in the outdoors than inside your home. Even if this standing water isn't coming from sewer lines, you are creating a hotbed for bacteria and insects. Keep an eye out for standing water, and investigate any patches of land that seem too wet or have inexplicable production of grass or plants.

Then there are a couple of quick steps for the bathroom and kitchen:

  • Look over the connections to thekitchen sink disposal anddishwasher. You want to ensure that they are fitted snugly and aren't leaking.
  • Make sure you have a garbage can in the bathroom: you don't want the toilet to be used as a disposal. That's a clog waiting to happen. No sanitary products, diapers, cotton swabs, cotton balls, etc. should be going down the toilet.

Sometimes, however, not even the best preventative measures can avoid a plumbing accident. If you need repair work done, or if you need quick service for a plumbing emergency, don't hesitate to call A-1 Sewer & Septic Service, Inc. right away. We charge nothing extra for emergency services, and we have over four decades of experience as plumbing technicians with which to serve you. Call our office today!
