When Is It Time to Call the Plumber?

Even the most proficient do-it-yourselfer will need expert help from time to time. This is especially apparent in a plumbing emergency. But even many seemingly commonplace issues would still be best left to the expertise of a Kansas City plumber, saving you both time and money.

One such instance is when you are experiencing low water pressure all around the house. This could be the symptom of any number of problems. It could be that debris and rust have accumulated somewhere along your pipes, or perhaps the issue lies with the city's water pressure. Maybe your supply line is defectively designed. When it is unclear where the trouble started, a plumber can help you quickly diagnose and solve the problem.

If your house does not have hot water, you could again run into the tricky situation of not knowing what it is that needs to be fixed. Only if the hot water tank is actually leaking is it easy to discern where the problem started. Otherwise, you could be looking at anything from a blown fuse, to a broken thermostat, or a malfunctioning igniter or thermocouple burner. When it comes to hot water, especially at this time of the year, you do not want any delay in resolving the problem.

If your sewer line is not draining well, and you have attempted all the solutions you know, you may have a bad plug along the line to the main sewer. A tree root is likely behind this problem. It is possible to rent a sewer rodding machine, but you would run the very real risk of damaging the machine itself, or even harming your sewer line. This job is best left to a plumber.

The first thing to do if you experience frozen pipes is to turn off the main water supply and to turn on a faucet near the frozen section. Then see you if you can thaw out the pipe. If there is a crack in the pipe, however, then it is time to call the plumber. But if there is no break, you can take a hair dryer or heat gun to thaw your pipe (only use a propane torch if absolutely necessary, as there is a considerable risk of setting fire to the wood framing the pipes). When thawing the pipe is an option, it may still be best to have a plumber replace the frozen pipe altogether.
