Plumbing FAQ

Why does my sink drain so slowly?
Over time, soap, food debris and grease can slow drainage. It is not uncommon for there to be low places in the line or bad joints in the line where build up gathers and causes a sink to drain slowly. If this is the situation, a Kansas City plumber at A-1 Sewer & Septic Service Inc. can help you fix your drains!

My garbage disposal is jammed, what do I do?
There is one option that might solve your problem. Your garbage disposal has a "reset" button on the bottom. First, take an Allen wrench into the bottom of the disposal and crank it back and forth to try to free the motor. Once, it is moving, press the reset button and turn on the disposal to see if the problem is solved. If it won't function, call us right away, we know what to do.

Can you repair broken or leaky pipes without destroying my yard?
Yes. We offer trenchless pipe repairs in some cases, this means that we will utilize minimal digging in localized areas and your yard will remain unharmed. Using video camera technology, we can locate the problem and fix it without digging long trenches from your home to main lines.

What are the signs of a broken or leaky water line?
Some signs of leaky or broken water lines may include the sound of running water when no faucets are on, puddles in your yard that seem to have no origin, excessively high water bills, mold growing on walls, bulges in flooring or walls and dripping sounds.

What causes low water pressure?
There are a number of various causes for low water pressure including a malfunctioning shut-off valve, a crimped water line, and even residue buildup inside water lines. If you are experiencing low pressure, then you should seek professional assistance. You may need to do major work on your pipes.

How do I turn off my water if my faucet breaks?
If your faucet has broken, don't panic! To shut-off your water, look beneath the sink for two valves. One is for the hot-water faucet, and one is for the cold-water faucet. Turn the handles of both valves clockwise (from right to left) until the water stops. If it doesn't move, it probably is stuck from lack of use. Get a pair of pliers and wiggle the valve back and forth until it begins to loosen up. After you've successfully turned off the water, call our Kansas City plumbers for expert assistance in fixing the faucet.

Why did my water turn yellow?
Old pipes often become rusty and build up rust/iron oxide. This causes the water to become yellow and taste slightly metallic. To fix this, you should replace your pipes.

How do I know if my sewer line is the reason for frequent backups?
If you are dealing with frequent backups with your sewer line, contact A-1 Sewer & Septic Service Inc. and we will send one of our Kansas City plumbers to your home to inspect the line.
